Lesson #15

Survival or Reform

Return to Index

To be a good astrologer, you must WANT to be a good astrologer. Some of our students with the least previous education are making the best progress, because they WANT to be good astrologers. They are determined to conquer this subject. Others are dragging behind merely because they have not yet decided that they WANT to be GOOD in this field. We have given the student every possible cooperation. We have never failed to answer questions nor explain the answers. Yet, some students are not cooperating with us. For example, some have not written that interpretation of Venus-in- Capricorn that we requested. Some of the interpretations that have been written, by students to whom astrology is completely new, are among the best we have read, but if you can't write a GOOD interpretation, write a bad one, and we will tell you. You are going to have to practice interpretation. If necessary you are going to have to make mistakes, but mistakes are valuable, because they show us what is wrong. Mistakes themselves always form a pattern, and it is our job to detect that pattern and explain it to the student. When the student understands the pattern of his own mistakes, he never makes those mistakes again.

Although we still have lots more to tell you, from now on, you are going to have to work at astrology. You are going to have to collect charts and interpret them. You are going to have to WANT to be a good astrologer. You are going to have to practice. You are going to have to prove to yourself, by experience, that the principles work the way we say they do. You must not be satisfied to take our word for it. When you see them working, you are not going to forget about them. You are going to remember.

How good an astrologer do you want to be? How far are you willing to go? We asked you to write an interpretation of Venus-in-Capricorn. Why not write an interpretation of Venus in each of the twelve signs, a theoretical, analytical interpretation? What do you THINK each of these configurations should mean. Write the interpretations and send them to us. If they are good if you are on the right track, wetil tell you so If you are not on the right track, just let us determine WHY you are not on the right track. Let us be responsible for finding the error in your work. That is our responsibility, and we are here to assume it. When you have succeeded in writing a good interpretation for Venus in each sign, you are going to be well on your way. After that, other interpretations are going to be easy for you. After a while, you will get so that you can look at a chart and see at a glance more information than you could put in a novel length book. You will see the design of the whole.

Right now however, you are at a crossroads. Are you going ahead or are you going to fall back? You have got to practice. You have got to work and let us criticise your work. We have let you go a long way by yourself, but no more of that. We have told you, but now you are going to have to start telling us. If there appear to be any obstacles in your path from your point of view, you better start telling us about them now. This is where we begin to get tough.

After that little lecture, we will continue on our way. In correspondence, students have been adopting a series of abbreviations, and without knowing each other, the students have all gone forward with the same abbreviations. Therefore, we are going to adopt the set of abbreviations that have been universally introduced by the students themselves independently of each other. In the future, we will save a lot of words by the use of these abbreviations, and we will introduce them here:

FOR Frame of Reference

For the present, we will limit ourselves to these 17 abbreviations. Four represent groups of principles. Twelve represent astrology's twelve basic principles. The last one is added because of its almost universal use by our students. It just appeared to be the natural thing for nearly everyone to adopt these particular abbreviations. To understand the functioning of the twelve astrological principles it is necessary to realize that EVERYTHING in astrology is a battle between the past and the future. Everything is a question of whether an old design is going to be continued or whether a new design is to be allowed to come into being. All designs are mathematical, for mathematics is nothing but a study of design. A mathematical formula is nothing but a design, a symmetrical design.

Everything in life involves this question as to whether the old design is to remain or whether a new design is to be adopted. When a child is born, a being starts functioning according to a new design. That design appears in the heavens at the moment of his birth. When a man dies, the old design is left behind. Without life to hold it together, the old design (the body) disintegrates and falls apart. This one design (a single life) is a composite made up of many smaller designs. From the date of birth onward, life is a battle to determine what designs are to be retained and what designs are to be left behind, so that other new designs may become an experience of the life. It is a battle between the survival dynamics and the reform dynamics.

When pondering an interpretation, it will become much easier for the student if he remains conscious of the fact that first he must judge whether an old pattern or design is going to be continued or whether a new design is going to come into being. At birth, a design comes into being. At death, an old design is discarded.

A revelation of astrology lies in the fact that death and divorce showup as synonomous. Divorce is the death of a relationship, a combination, a design. Death of an individual is the same thing. Under these circumstances, we are almost forced to the conclusion that a being existed in some form prior to birth and has to exist in some form after death. Prior to a marriage, both parties to the marriage existed. After a divorce, both parties to the marriage exist. The marriage does not exist. That had a birth and a death. It seems quite logical to assume that the "self", the consciousness, what religious people call the "soul" had to exist before birth and has to continue to exist after death. This is not an argument for reincarnation, for we have no opinion on the subject. Reincarnation is a theory or a possibility, but there can be millions of other possibilities and explanations. It need not be necessary for the being to exist in the 3-dimensional material world. He might exist in entirely different dimensions. You exist in some other kind of a world when you dream.

Something that has always fascinated the writer is the fact that the same kind of aspects that accompany divorce, in many cases, accompany death of the partner instead. This begs a very interesting guestion. If the couple had been divorced, would the partner have lived? Despite the various purposes it serves, marriage is often a strain. It is a severe strain to have to live with a person who has a discordant chart. It is a severe strain to live with a person whose chart badly afflicts your own. We see many cases where a person gets sick immediately following marriage, and gets well following a divorce.

We recall a case where a child had to be placed in a mental institution, but as soon as placed there, the child got well. There was a shifting back and forth, because as soon as the child came home she became ill again. After the problem became sufficiently complex, we were consulted. The mother had a badly afflicted Mars. The child was born at that time when Neptune in Virgo reached the mother's Mars by transit, so that Neptune in the chart of the child is always on Mars in the chart of the mother. We were forced to advise that for the good of the child's health and future, mother and child must be separated. The child was allowed to live with relatives, and was soon back in school functioning normally.

About two-thirds of the people who consult astrologers are women. Therefore, we have that much more experience with women. When a woman of 40 or more shows up as a client, and we see a strong affliction between Mars and Uranus in her natal chart, we always feel like asking, "Are you a widow or divorced?" However, we are more diplomatic and we let her tell us voluntarily. This does not mean that you can't stay married if you were born under an affliction of Mars-Uranus, but it does mean that you have to have a lot more knowledge and understanding of human relationships than will suffice for other people. There are great many people who can remain ignorant and still get along, but for some people, such an existence will become too uncomfortable to tolerate. The result is that a great many people with Mars-Uranus afflictions become very intelligent. Certainly, none of them are stupid people.

Bear in mind that if we collect the charts of widowers and widows, we find that the charts are of a certain type. Principally, thay show an excess of Mars aspects. One woman told us that she was a fatalist. She had married four times and all of her husbands died. She had Mars conjunct Uranus plus Venus conjunct Saturn. Did she marry men who were going to die, or would these men have lived if they did not marry her?

Remember that in a case cited above, the child got well when separated (divorced) from her mother. We think of a man who died of a heart attack. Shortly before the attack, he told us that his wife just wouldn't let him out of her sight. He was under a severe strain because of the manner in which his wife insisted on being a part of his life nearly all of the time. He obviously wanted to get away and would fly across the country to see us "on business" when there was no business to discuss. His wife would fight against these trips. At birth, his Sun was conjunct Jupiter in Cancer. During most of his life, he had clung to her too, but now transiting Uranus had reached his Sun-Jupiter. He got away. He had been a very insecure man and he had always needed his wife. He would never make a business decision without asking her advice, but when Uranus, the IRG, cane along, he no longer wanted to cling to the old pattern. He found a way out. He had a heart attack and died. We have not heard from him since. He eliminated us from his design also. What he is doing now, we do not know.

We have pointed out earlier that a person can get locked in an FOR. Physical death would appear to be a means of completely changing one's FOR, but there are other, less drastic ways.

Illness and many other problems can be the result of an association, but often it is improper to break the association and cure the illness. In many cases, such a break is considered to be immoral. In New York State, a woman cannot divorce her husband for any reason other than adultry, and even this is not sufficient grounds unless the woman can show that she tried to prevent the adultry. There may be no children to consider, but no matter, this woman cannot legally have a divorce. She may be very sick from the association, but the law allows her but one legal way out--to die. All of this is the work of whatever dogma happens to be the most politically powerful in a particular area.

This discussion is for the purpose of getting one principle across to you, that everything in astrology is a question of whether a design is going to be continued, altered or completely changed. Everything is a battle between survival and non-survival.

We see one man marry poor and become wealthy. We see another of wealth marry and lose everything, Here is a man who married and then accumulated wealth and position. There was a divorce, after which he lost all of his money and he has never been able to make any money since.

Here is a man of very moderate means who takes a partner into the business. The partner never works. This goes on for years but from the moment he entered the business, the company began making money, and both men became quite wealthy. After ten years of griping about his lazy, good-for-nothing partner, the first man threw out the partner. Soon thereafter, the company began losing money and it finally failed. The original man never made much money thereafter. The second man became the lazy, good-for nothing partner in another firm and went on making money.

In other words, even money making seems to be a matter of a design. Here is another man who was very poor until his fourth child was born. He began making money, and continued to accumulate wealth for the next 21 years, at which time, this fourth child broke away from him, refused to accept his domination, and went off on his own. The father never made any money after that. His fortune dwindled until at his death, there was little for the family to inherit. That fourth child did all right on his own. It would almost appear that the father was able to make money only so long as it was necessary for the protection of this one child.

During thirty years of astrological practice, we have served many very wealthy people of the country. We have always been alert to see what qualifications were responsible for their money-making. It doesn't seem to be a matter of qualificatIons because many of them have no qualifications. Money comes their way in spite of anything they can do. It is unfortunate that because most of these people are still alive, we cannot tell these true stories. The information is in the realms of the confidential. Nevertheless, although John Smith is making $500 a week, it may be possible for him, through sincere effort and hard labor, to increase this to $650 a week--or even $700, but John will go right on with his hard labor. If he invests his surplus in a wildcat oil scheme, he will probably lose it. John is following a pattern, a design, and until he understands that pattern, his hard-work environment is going to survive. He is going to cling to it, because to him, it represents security.

Some student is going to write in this question unless we answer it now. We have stated that when a child is born, a being starts functioning according to a new design, and that the design appears in the heavens at the moment of birth. If this is true, then does the design of the heavens at the moment of death indicate the pattern of the future existence of the being? This is something to think about and students of astrology have been thinking about it for thousands of years. It has probably been responsible for some of the versions of reincarnation.

However, to accept this idea, it is necessary to assume that hhe entity does not escape the solar system as an FOR. In fact, it means that he does not even escape the earth as an FOR. This introduces a terrific limitation to thought. Of course, not all reincarnationists claim that ALL people are reincarnated here on earth. We are not going to try to answer the question. We have never had enough evidence to justify an opinion, so we will remain open-minded. We do not know. If we ever find out, we will tell you.

All prime human characteristics are of two classifications, those that are intendec to perpetuate the pattern of the past and those which are intended to produce new designs. All designs are mathematical abstractions.

Sex is always trying to perpetuate the hereditary pattern. The ISD is always trying to preserve the design of the individual, while the SSD is always trying to preserve a social pattern of nature that man has outlawed. You can't outlaw nature. You merely make criminals that way. You also make sick people that way.

Nature is going to function regardless. If you want her to work with you, stop ignoring her. Stop ignoring what she considers to be her rights under a higher law. Man is very ignorant to think that he can pass laws and outlaw Nature. Nature is stronger than all civilization combined Sometimes she is very patient. She can afford to be patient. She will live longer than you can in your present form. If you think you are thwarting her, all she has to do is wait for you to die. To oppose her is going to be a serious strain on you, and you may have to die more quickly. Civilizations are born. They make their laws and they die. Nature outlives all civilizations, all scientific hypotheses, all religious creeds. We find continents of old at the bottom of the sea.

It is a battle of survival of form, but the solution often lies in recognizing nature, cooperating with her, and being willing to accept survival or reform when nature, mathematics and astrology illustrate that survival or reform is the solution. Get acquainted with all the human characteristics that people have but analyze them, always classify then determine whether these characteristics have as their prime motive survival or reform. A young girl is thrilled because of a new date. The motive is reform of family form. Lurking in the background, however, will be the FSD just waiting an opportunity to take advantage of this situation and perpetuate two hereditary patterns, each on a 50% ratio. If you will follow our advice and always analyze things down to a survival and reform basis, you will gradually be discovering that life is basically much more simple than you ever thought it to be.

Yet, it's like numbers. To understand numbers you must first understand ONE and then TWO. As you go on, numbers get more and more complicated, but everything grows out of ONE. You understand higher numbers by understanding lower numbers, but as you go higher and higher, you will find that no matter how high you go, there are always numbers that have some new characteristics that are not possessed by any lower numbers. For example, 3,628,800 is the lowest number that can be factored by the first ten integers or numerals. 435,891,456,000 is the lowest number that can be factored by the first 15 integers.

Whether you are interpreting a planet conjunct a node, a planet in a sign, a planetary aspect or a planet in a house, first determine whether survival or reform factors are prevalent. Will the indiviual meet a stranger, or will he go see his grandmother?

Naturally, you are going to have more complicated problems, but you will understand them better if, at the start, you start weighing everything in terms of survival or reform. Can a girl's attachment to her family prevent her from getting married? Will she have to marry a man who looks like her father? Occasionally, you will meet a married couple who look so much alike to be mistaken for brother and sister. Was the FSD trying to capture more than a 50% hereditary factor? Was the FSD trying to accomplish incest?

In Lesson XIV, we had a good deal to say about negative Mars-Uranus aspects. We selected these aspects because they are the most important ones where the clients of an astrologer are concerned. Most problems crossing the desk of an astrologer concern this group of aspects, but unfortunately, the majority of astrologers have never happened to find this out. They are exclusively looking for women in the Moon and men in the Sun, while their clients are all wrapped up in the FSD. In other words, the clients want some answer to the problems that their own sex lives present. They go to church and are told to think about something else, but they go home and there are the problems. They don't understand them and they don't know what to do about them. What is more important, they find themselves unable to control them.

Let us look further into these Mars-Uranus aspects. What do the favorable Mars-Uranus aspects do? Kenneth Brown, New York astrologer, originally taught psychology at Columbia University. He studied astrology, and during the war, he became Personnel Director of a war plant. He began putting his astrology to work. All employes had to submit birth dates. He found that the employes with Mars- Uranus aspects were the best mechanics, regardless of whether the aspects were favorable or unfavorable, but the employes with the unfavorable aspects were accident prone.

We speak of favorable aspects. Actually, we should not call them favorable or unfavorable, because what we mean is that some aspects involve the past while others involve the future. The so-called favorable aspects involve the future.

Here is a good example. In collecting the charts of people who have been convicted of sexually molesting children, the most prominent aspect in their charts is a sextile or trine aspect of Mars to Uranus. At first this may be a difficult thing to understand until we consider that they were ahead of time. Had they waited a few years, the matter would not have been a crime. Had the sex act occurred later, it would not have been criminal. From this point of view, the whole thing becomes a matter of what we call time. It makes a big difference whether you are at a certain point in space just before a bullet crosses that point, when it crosses or just after it crosses. In the first and third cases, you are safe. In the second you are not. People with favorable aspects are in the habit of being ahead of time. People with unfavorable aspects (so called) are in the habit of being late. So called positive aspects are precognitive, while so-called negative aspects are retrospective. While some people are constantly seeing the future, others are seeing the past. In each case the view probably contains much that is inaccurate. Although the precognitive factor may be faulty, what is more faulty than memory? If we are to rule out precognition because it is faulty, we must also rule out memory because it is just as faulty. It is well known that witneses in a court room, testifying about the past, all who supposedly saw the same event, will tell many different versions of what occurred.

There is little doubt that some dreams are precognitive. There are many people who dream events before they occur, It has been our impression that all dreams may be precognitive, but there is an obstacle. The minds of a great many people can interpret the future only in terms of the past. In his book, An Experiment With Time, J. W. Dunne explains dreams as being a mixture of past and future. We would alter this and say that all dreams may be stimulated by the future, but they are usually presented in terms and symbols of the past.

Where you have a great excess of Water and Earth in a chart, it is the tendency of the native to always "expect" things to follow the same old routine. He regards it as "common sense" for tomorrow to be like yesterday. In facf, he wants tomorrow to be like yesterday. He never dares think about it being different for that would make him insecure. If tomorrow is not going to be like yesterday, he doesn't know what to do. On the other hand, where there is a great excess of Fire and Air in a chart, the individual thinks of tomorrow as different, for here, the constant drive is toward change. It is the nature of Fire and Air to live in the future, while it is the nature of £arth and Water to live in the past. There is always the question: Do we like things as they are or should we change them? There are many people who do not like things as they are, but they are afraid to change them. Society and orthodoxy frown on change. Here is a personnel director who refuses to hire a man because he has worked in too many places. He wants people who will frustrate themselves and stick to a routine. One thing he does not want in an employee is intelligence. If the man who owns this multimillion dollar company, for which this personnel man works, should anonomously apply for a job, he would be turned down. He has none of the qualifications demanded by this personnel director. That could be dangerous, for the owner of this company did apply for a job in one of his own companies under another name and worked in a minor position for a year in order to learn what was going on. Nobody in the company knew of his presence. In fact, nobody in the company had ever met or seen him consciously.

At the time when we first began exploring the possibilities of astrology, most everything was based on tradition and religion, or to put it another way, almost everything was based on dogma. Unfortunately, the last thirty years have not changed the overall picture in the world of astrology at large very much. Astrological books are filled with claims which the sponsors have never tested to see whether they were true or false, or how much of them may be true or false. The astrological student should accept nothing until he has tested it out, not with one but many tests. He should approach the subject with a good deal of skepticism.

In this connection, we are going to bring up the subject of retrograde and stationary planets. A planet is said to be retrograde when, from an earth-as-a-center viewpoint, its motion is clockwise instead of counterclockwise. First, let us see what makes a planet retrograde. In the case of Mercury and Venus, these bodies are nearer to the Sun than the earth. Consequently, we see them moving connterclockwise when they are on the other side of the Sun. Then, they come toward us and move (what is to us) clockwise, passing between the Sun and the earth, going in the opposite direction. In your ephemeris, they will be going backwards or retrograde.

The other planets are further away from the Sun than the earth. The earth goes around the whole circle in a year, and as it does, it passes thes other planets, making them appear to move backwards in the sky, or retrograde. Because it is going around the earth, the Moon is never retrograde5 The apparent motion of the Sun is never retrograde. All of the planets themselves are retrograde part of the time. The lunar and planetary nodes are always clockwise in their motion.

Years back, Evangeline Adams placed great emphasis on retrograde planets. She claimed that the stock market was always weak when planets, but particularly hercury, were retrograde. Ever since that time, astrologers have been writing that the stock market is weak when planets are retrograde. This claim is entirely false.

In 1938, a Wall Street man came to call on the writer. He asked whether the writer believed that the stock market is weak when Mercury or any other planet is retrograde. The writer stated that he did not, and a test was agreed upon. It cost about $3000 to make this test. A record of market movement for every period when Mercury (and all the other planets) was retrograde was compared with every period when Mercury was direct. This record included the entire available history of the stock market. A figure was established for the average daily motion of the stock market when Mercury was retrograde and compared with the figure for the average daily motion of the stock market when Mercury was direct. The two figures came out even. Results bearing on tests with the other planets were the same, All results were negative.

Tests were then continued to test all the astrological systems of forecasting the stock market that had been published. None of them stood up, with the exception of the lunar node cycle, but the cycle was too long for a legitimate test (l8 years). This cycle appeared to stand up fairly well but we had less than three complete cycles to test, and during the next fifteen years, this cycle broke down also.

These tests continued, and we tested nearly all the possibilities we could think of ourselves. Although we found some statistically significant results, they were not too important. A Boston banker spent in the neighborhood of a half million dollars making similar tests. He told us he got good results and that they made far more money for him than his research costs, but he kept the results to himself. We would not advise you to try beating the stock market by astrology unless you have a half million dollars to spend on research.

Grant Lewi believed in retrograde planets, although Grant didn't very often fall for unreliable ideas. The two of us discussed this subject a great deal. He maintained that his business always slowed down when Mercury was retrograde. The writer went home and put a statistical yard-stick to his own business records. He found that business was just as good when Mercury was retrograde as when it was direct. He went back to GL, showed him the statistical results and asked permission to submit GL's business records to the same statistical results. Permission was readily granted. The result was the same, Business was just as strong when Mercury was retrograde as when it was direct.

This demonstrates that the best of us must realize how faulty our own memories and observations may be. We cannot trust memory. That is why it is important to keep records. Don't trust your memory. If you "believe" something, it is easy to see it when it doesn't exist. On the other hand, it is human to be blind to anything that does not agree with an accepted hypothesis. This was once brought home to tie writer with a great impact.

While interviewing one of the top academic scientists of the country, the writer questioned one of the scientist's pet hypotheses and drew the very eluctant admission that there was no real proof. However, the admission did not come without annoyance and irritability on the part of the academician. We put this question to him.

"You admit that there is no statistical evidence for the claims you have publicly made. Suppose some outside party were to make a statistical test and found your claims to be wrong. What would you do?"

He replied, "I WOULDN'T BE INTERESTED."

Please don't follow this man's example. Be willing to make statistical tests. Learn HOW to make statistical tests. We will discuss this subject later, but get in the habit of submitting ideas and claims to severe tests. Remember that there are hundreds of unreliable books on astrology on the market, written by people with little or no experience in astrology. They merely picked up their ideas from someone else and passed them along. One difficulty is that they do not even pass them along accurately. As with memory, statements are distorted.

We are anxious to have you realize that everything can be resolved down to the question of whether a pattern is to be perpetuated or discarded. In some cases, however, we must consider patterns of motion. The motion may be a constant. Is it going to remain as a constant? Is it going to accelerate or decelerate?

Aside from reckless or drunken drivers of automobiles, the fast driver may be a better and safer driver than the slow driver. He may be far-sighted. He sees further ahead and anticipates the future better. The slow driver may be near-sighted. He has never learned to gage the speed of other cars. He drives right into the path of an oncoming car that has the right of way. Either the car seems a long distance away to him, or he doesn't see it at all. Watch the slow driver, the fellow who honestly believes that he is a careful driver. He often lacks understanding of speed and distance. He has no true conception of them. He drives right in front of an oncoming object and is oblivious to the danger. On the Los Angeles freeways, you can be arrested for driving too slowly. In the old days they used to tell the story of the Philadelphia lawyer who went to New York and was run over by a hearse.

Thus, patterns involve motion, and these too can be destroyed, as when the irresistable force meets the immovable object. Even so, the slow automobile driver needs concern himself only with two dimensions. The plane pilot must deal with three dimensions. His job is more complex.

We have divided all of the astrological factors, the zodiacal signs, the planets, the planetary aspects and the astrological houses into factors definitely representing either the past or the future. All problems resolve themselves down to this one basic factor. Will things remain as they are, or will they change? What pattern is to predominate, the same old pattern or the new one? Let us look at some of the common questions that repeatedly fly across an astrologer's desk:

Will I get married? Will my husband ever change? Will I get well? Will I be able to pay my bills? Should I buy a new car? Can I sell my house? TVill my husband give me a divorce? Will I be happy if I marry this man? Should I hire this man? Should I buy this hotel? Would I be more successful if I moved out west? Can I ever have children?

Everybody is concerned with whether they should hold on to an old pattern or adopt a new one. Hitler wanted one pattern. The Communists wanted another. We had our own choice. Different creeds battle for different patterns in their own way. The architect is almost totally concerned with patterns of the future. He designs buildings but he may merely repeat old designs. Engineers design bridges. They all have to know enough about mathematics to build their edifices in accord with abstract laws. They must calculate how much weight the floors and the bridges will hold. Miscalculations may cause a building to fail down, or may cause an automobile driver to lose his car or his body. When the writer was a boy, the speed limit for automobiles in many towns was eight miles per hour. Today, he can drive down one of the main thoroughfares of town and the speed limit is 45 miles per hour. In some places speeds that were illegal because they were too fast are now illegal because they are too slow.

We have dwelled at length on these factors, because it will make all interpretations easier, if you never lose sight of the fact that there is always the question as to whether things are to remain as they are or are to change. Some people want the pattern of the past to prevail because they feel insecure when facing any kind of change. Other people always want a new pattern, always want change, because unless things can exist in motion, these people get fed up, irritable and rebellious. Fortunately for these people, the solar system moves. Other people want change but they are afraid of it. They fear going after what they want. They talk about it all the time, but they never do anything about it. They may never leave the town where they were born. Examine the hproscope of such people, and you will find out why. If you can question these people in such a way as to allow them to see why they cling to certain things of the past as security, when they are not security at all, you will kick a spring. You'll see them let go, and when they do, there will suddenly be a new flow of energy. They will be in motion. They will be doing things. They'll know what they want and they will move so fast that you will have a hard job giving them advice. They will no longer feel the need of it Their health will be better too. However, when you want to travel at high speeds, you travel in the field of dynamics, and you have to know more about the mathematics of dynamics. Things have to be streamlined, and you may need sweptback wings.
